The Most Common Mistakes in Local Print Campaigns

COMMON PRINT CAMPAIGN MISTAKES TO AVOID

Print still works. But only if you do it right.

If your last print campaign didn’t pull results—or you’re about to send one out and crossing your fingers—this list is for you.

Here are the most common mistakes we see in local print, and how to fix them before they waste your money.

1. You Printed Without a Plan

This is mistake #1 for a reason.

A lot of businesses say, “Let’s send out a postcard!” but don’t stop to ask why. What are you promoting? Who are you targeting? What do you want people to do?

If the answer is “just to get our name out,” you’re already losing.

What to do instead:

  • Pick one product, one service, or one offer.
  • Make a goal. Calls? Walk-ins? Web traffic?
  • Send it to the right zip codes—not just everyone.

Don’t just mail to mail. Print with purpose.

2. No Real Offer

A lot of local mailers look nice. But they don’t say anything useful.

“Serving the community since 1997” isn’t a reason for someone to call you. Neither is “quality work you can trust.”

You need a clear reason for someone to stop what they’re doing and respond.

Better:

  • “Free appetizer with any entrée—this weekend only.”
  • “$200 off your roof repair—mention this card.”
  • “Free birthday party tour + bonus gift if you book in May.”

79% of consumers say they’re more likely to respond to a direct mail piece with a special offer.

3. No Tracking

If you don’t know what came from your print ad, how do you know if it worked?

A lot of business owners guess. They “feel like” it did something. That’s not enough.

How to track it:

  • Use a custom phone number (you can get these free from Google Voice or cheap from CallRail)
  • Use a short URL with UTM tracking (if you’re sending people online)
  • Ask your staff to log when someone brings in the mailer

If you’re running an offer, make it code-based or limited time so it’s easy to count.

4. No Call to Action (or a Weak One)

“Call us today.” Okay. Why?

Your print needs a CTA that tells people what to do and why to do it now.

Good:

  • “Scan to book your table this weekend.”
  • “Call by Friday for 15% off.”
  • “Bring this to our Plano location and get a free upgrade.”

Be specific. Urgent. Real.

5. Bad Design (Or Way Too Much Text)

Your flyer isn’t a website. It’s not a brochure. It’s not your life story.

It’s one message. One headline. One offer.

What doesn’t work:

  • Too many fonts
  • Small text
  • Bad contrast (gray text on white? stop that)
  • Giant logos with no purpose

You want the eye to go: headline → offer → CTA. That’s it.

6. Sending It to the Wrong People

If you’re a pediatric dentist in McKinney, why are you mailing all of Dallas?

If you sell high-end landscaping, why are you hitting apartments?

Even with EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail), you can filter by household type and income brackets. Use that.

Don’t waste money on people who aren’t your people.

7. No Follow-Up

A print piece is a conversation starter. It’s not the whole conversation.

If someone scans your QR code, do they get retargeted? If they call and don’t book, do you follow up? If they come in once, do you add them to your list?

Print should feed your digital. The goal is to get them in your funnel—not just toss the postcard on the counter.

8. Sending It Once and Quitting

Consistency matters. One mailing isn’t a campaign. It’s a test.

Send it:

  • At least 3 times, to the same list
  • About 2–4 weeks apart

This builds recognition. Response rates usually go up with repetition.

And yes, this works even if the offer doesn’t change. People need reminders.

9. Bad Timing

You sent your restaurant promo the week after spring break. You sent your A/C tune-up postcard after the first heat wave. You mailed your Christmas promo December 20.

Print has lead time. You’ve got to plan 3–5 weeks ahead, especially if you want to hit an event, holiday, or seasonal shift.

We help clients at FMC Printing time this right. If you’re not sure when to drop it, we’ll tell you.

10. Skipping Proofing Steps

Typos. Wrong phone numbers. A headline that doesn’t match the offer.

We’ve seen it all.

You print 20,000 postcards with the wrong web address and it’s game over.

Double-check:

  • Phone number (call it!)
  • Website link (test it!)
  • Offer details (date, location, anything that could confuse)

Have two people proof it before print. Always.
